‘Hourglass’: a performance held at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus in 2012.
In a rectangular framed performance tank of clear vinyl, the artist paints thick lines of black paint against the inner surface of the plastic. The process begins at the bottom of the tank and progresses upward until the transparency is completely obstructed and the object is transformed into a black, reflective surface. The performer wears a wireless camera unit that transmits live to a projection on the wall behind the performance tank showing the performers perspective from the inside. Another live camera is fixed on the roof projecting a bird’s eye view on to the adjacent wall to the wireless projection. A pre-recorded sound composition involving long monotonous cello drones was matched by the performer’s movement of the brush in the painting process. The performance ended when all the surfaces where completely blackened.
Hourglass explores aspects of time and perspective.
